YOGALATES BLISS SESSIONS
DUBAI TESTIMONIAL

RESPECT. We absolutely LOVE it when our clients walk in and out of their Yogalates [Yoga and Pilates] Sessions in Dubai feeling transformed physically, mentally and energetically and a massive thanks to our movement specialist – Kim Danoher – for lighting up the positive flame in our client’s bodies and mind.

Kim and I have known each other for a while through Yogalates. I went to Kim this summer after finishing a 6 month programme of chemotherapy. My body was a mess! Examples included not being able to open a bottle, not being able to stand any longer than 20 minutes. Coping with an hours worth of pain across the my back after getting out of bed.

After 8 months of seeing Kim twice a week, I understand my body better than I ever have done which has not only allowed me to move without pain again but I have the strength to get into postures that I struggled with even before chemo and oh pregnancy!

Kim has patience, she was able to connect with me at time that I was very fragile but also gave me the push and confidence to help me get to where I am today. I cannot describe how integral she has been on my journey to restoration.

I have referred her to so many people who are in pain and I have every confidence that she can fix them. Although she is a yoga teacher, I think the skills, dedication and ‘inner geek’ in her makes sessions with Kim much more than Yoga. As you can probably tell, I have a lot to say about how fantastic Kim is!” Bridgett Lau Cooke

YOGALATES WITH KIM DANOHER

At Yogalates, we explore the layers of muscles that make up the core then work to build strength and tone in these muscles that translate into a fluid practice. Building greater core stability is the one thing everyone needs in order to progress in yoga from standing postures, side bends, balancing sequences, spinal twists, flexibility and chest opening exercises for a healthier breathing pattern and being able to move freely and expansively through everyday life!
Our sessions are friendly meaning, all levels and all walks of life are welcome. You’ll be offered modifications by Kim if a pose is new to you and advanced variations if you are a regular client.
We preach the outdoors and nature inspired activities at Bliss and invite you to be prepared to soak in plenty FRESH air and enjoy the sound of nature, sight of sunset, stars and the occasional full moon in all its glory.
However if it rains, we will take shelter in our cosy indoor studio [below]!

SPINAL TONIC, CORE STRENGTH AND OUTDOOR YOGALATES SESSIONS AT FRASER SUITES DUBAI

Just like servicing a car, your body and mind require weekly maintenance to stay mobile. Stretching and strengthening your shoulders after spending hours behind your laptop not only feels GREAT, but it lowers the risk of sudden spasms, strains, muscle knots and fatigue. Sounds familiar? Here is what one of our dedicated members, a runner and long time Dubai resident had to say…

I’m originally from London and I’ve been managing arabianEye – a photo agency based in Media City – for the last 4 years. I’ve been attending Yogalates for several years now and have been meaning to write this testimonial for quite some time! Having experienced long term issues with my lower back, I was recommended to try Yogalates as a means to strengthen my core. Over a year later, my back is far better than ever and my posture has significantly improved. As well as the physical benefits, I have found that Yogalates really helps me to unwind after a stressful day at work.

I can sometimes turn up in an awful mood (!) but will leave feeling great! I love being outdoors at the moment, so the setting for me is ideal compared to all the other yoga and pilates classes in Dubai” – Greg Aslangul

The healing benefits of fusing stretching and strengthening exercises at Yogalates!

Standard

Kim Danoher Reverse Warrior

If you’re looking at Yoga or Pilates to tighten your core, build strength, stand taller and feel energized, Yogalates combines the best of both to get the ‘job’ done. Both Yoga and Pilates require concentration, consistent practice and awareness. That’s why they are classified under “mind-body” programs, along with Tai Chi and Meditation.

Our Yogalates sessions in Dubai combines both Yoga and Pilates in a 1hour flow. Pilates is your strength training and Yoga is your flexibility training. While yoga focuses on opening the hips, spine and shoulders, Pilates requires stabilization, minimal movement and deep core control. Not only do they both complement and contribute to improving your mobility and muscle tone, they both build on your coordination, balance skills and help cure an achy lower back.

So while you are stretching your tendons, you’re also strengthening the legs, opening up the shoulders and upper back. While soothing the lower back, you’re also massaging the neck and the shoulder blades. While stretching the sides you are also toning the obliques that support the structure of the lower back.

At Yogalates, you will focus on a number of chest opening postures, build stamina, muscular strength, core stability and back care therapeutics to allow for more freedom in your body. You will learn how to build strong abs and move your spine through its full range of motion with grace and ease to support and ensure that your posture doesn’t collapse.

The lateral bends elongate the sides of your waist – massaging the lower back and providing more length. The gentle twists decompresses your spine, increases the space between the vertebrae and aligns both sides of your body equally. The chest-opening exercises and forward bends, followed by twists and side bends provide full flexion and extension of the torso and reduces pressure from the lumbar nerve endings.

Our Yogalates sessions are held in the beautiful outdoors at Fraser Suites Dubai next to The Greens, Dubai Media City and TECOM area. . . so expect to leave class with a new sense of space in your spine, heart, mind and lungs!

Why we Love a Core Strength Yoga and Pilates Fusion Session in Dubai!

Yogalates Bliss in Dubai - Core Strength Yoga at Fraser Suites

Have you recently been feeling and complaining about nagging aches and pains in the neck, shoulders, arms, backs or legs? It is time to shift focus to the core muscles (the torso which extends from the base of the neck to the bottom of the spine and includes the abdomen and all the back and hip muscles). Underdeveloped and unbalanced muscle groups in one area of the body could very well mean having a weak core muscle. The core stabilizes and encases the vertebrae surrounding the spinal cord.

The nerves in both your arms and legs function best when you have a strong and stable core. Both the neck and the lower back are dependent on the core muscles to stabilize the spine so that all vertebral segments align with one another in a way that does NOT compress the nerves that pass through them.  When nerves are compressed, they can’t deliver full electrical impulses to muscles. And when that happens,  the muscles can’t work the way they should …weakness and pain are the result.

Yogalates (fusion of core work derived from Pilates and Yoga) enables your skeleton, muscles and joints to work together optimally, because only the core exercises offer the unique combination of strengthening, stretching , balancing and realigning that allows your body to withstand daily wear and tear while complementing your other activities and daily life movements. Plus, you’ll feel FABULOUS walking stronger, taller and more powerful from your deepest core!

Core Strength in Yoga – Without The Crunches!

Strong Core Muscles | Healthy Back – Yogalates Bliss in Dubai

“Everybody wants a flat stomach, but the worst way to get one is to deliberately contract your abdominal muscles” ~ Pete Egoscue.

We already flex the trunk forward all day long when we sit, drive, lean forward or stand with our tailbone tucked under. Repetitive spinal flexion over time can mess up our natural lumbar curve, creating compression on the discs in places where they are not supposed to be compressed. Read more by clicking here

A healthy yoga/pilates practice can improve your core strength WITHOUT the need for endless crunches. At Yogalates we employ a variety of excellent core work and awareness through forward folds, side/backbends, twists, balance exercises and relaxing tight psoas to release stiffness in the lower back area.

3 BENEFITS OF PRACTICING YOGALATES OUTDOORS

Standard
CoverPhotoFB

Outdoor Yogalates Bliss session by the pool at Fraser Suites Dubai

1) Practicing outside increases your skill and muscles for balance.

When we go through balance postures outdoors, we cannot turn to or rely on a bar, beam, wall to balance. We offer our students to “fix their gaze on a star, sunset or cloud” as we were in a pose, to help them develop their focus. Nothing is stable outside. While in Ardha Chandrasana, (Half Moon Pose) the gaze towards the moon is an amazing experience and really, there are no walls for solidity on the way up. Proprioception is mastered balancing outside, and helps improve your balance back at home.

2) Practicing outside helps develop inner strength and stability.

While often we desire to do our meditation and practice inside in a quiet and controlled “AC” environment, if it’s too cool, we turn the AC off….if it’s too loud, we close the door. Or, we crank up some tunes. None of this is possible outdoors. One learns to “welcome” the breeze and sound of birds while practicing on the terrace and while you might sweat during the hotter months, the external “natural elements” is a great, healthy distraction. But working hard is not determined by the amount of sweat one produces, that is a myth. Working hard is determined by the amount of focus one is able to apply to NOT let anything distract you. It’s quite a feat to gain strength when the outer elements are also part of the practice. When we can “welcome” those natural elements, we become stronger and more stable in all aspects of our life. There is less requiring things to be a certain way and more acceptance for things as they are at this moment.

3) Practicing outdoors aligns you with Nature.

It is just amazing for your skin, your glow, your respiratory system, your stress levels (cortisol) and connecting to the greatest of living things, our planet. For those of us who’ve been on a yoga retreat or simply enjoying the outdoors on holiday, you might never forget the amazing sunsets, surrounding nature, wildlife, gorgeous views of turquoise, green, blue ocean and white sands blending into each other, and the fresh feeling of being reconnected with nature’s finest.

Hence, just some of the reasons why we encourage any yogi to develop a meditation and practice outdoors especially being cooped up indoors the whole day. It is not only a benefit to ourselves, but a means of loving and appreciating our planet. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali explain that perfection in our practice is achieved when we are unaffected by the dualities. And trust us when we say, once you break into a sweat outdoors at Yogalates, it will only feel sweeter and welcoming throughout the session with the breeze cooling you down during savasana, under the stars, by the pool, overlooking the ocean on the horizon, on the 7th floor. Bliss!

The Importance of Core Strength in a Yoga Practice!

Standard

Yogalates Core Strength

If you practice Yogalates at Fraser Suites, you might have heard our instructors stress on “engaging the core” in poses when flowing from chair pose to plank. And have you noticed how as soon as you engage your abdominals, it helps you balance and transition into poses more effectively? That’s your core muscles speaking!

Why is core strength important in yoga?
A strong core stabilizes your whole body, both on your yoga mat and daily life and errands. When you neglect to work your core, you increase risk of injury, mainly in the lower back. For example, in Chair Pose, it’s easy to sit into this pose and direct all your weight onto your glutes. Great work for your lower body however, when you pull your belly in towards your spine, this takes a little bit of weight out of your legs, prevents any chances of a lower back strain while stabilizing your deep core muscles. So now the work is balanced evenly across your abs, back and lower body for a total workout.  A strong core also enhances grace and stability during simple transitions from Warrior 2, to extended side angle, and back to reverse warrior. In addition, core strength is required for arm balances and inversions like crow pose, headstand or forearm stand.

Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga in Dubai with Clara Roberts

The importance of core strength OUTSIDE of yoga into your daily life…

Our sweet corporate lifestyle might not be too sweet to our back as chances are, you spend a large time sitting in front of a computer screen or being on foot all day. Sitting and standing for long hours puts a lot of strain on your lower back, since your lower back supports the large majority of your weight. When you have a strong core, it helps protect your body from the wear and tear of sitting and standing all day. It allows you to also move with more grace and fluidity when you’re walking up the stairs or twisting to grab a box.

Next time you’re at Yogalates or any Yoga session, try to activate about your core muscles during each pose, and within each transition. Feel how it transforms your experience. Then, continue to think about your core strength when you leave the class to walk to your car and throughout your daily life because chances are, you will stand taller, move more fluidly and keep your precious spine supple and strong!

YOGALATES DUBAI & MY RETREAT IN BALI – CATCHING UP WITH NOURA

We caught up with the founder of Yogalates Bliss in Dubai, Noura El-Imam, an adventurous foodie constantly dreaming, visualising and planning! Noura is born in the UAE with a passion for the outdoors, lust for travels, a constant drive for hosting top caliber Yoga Teacher Trainings in Dubai led by international senior teachers from around the world and a big believer in fusing Yoga and Pilates at her Yogalates signature outdoor sessions to offer her clients a complete functional workout involving back care and exercise therapeutics. Can you tell us a bit about Yogalates and how it came about?

With the constant ‘work hard’ scene in the UAE, being glued behind the desk and car only results in poor habitual postural patterns such as slouched shoulders, weak back and abs, stiffness in the hips and neck, and lack of mobility in the joints. After completing my teacher training in both Yoga and Pilates mat intensive, I decide to fuse the best of both with the aim in strengthening the deep core muscles while building endurance, strength and improving flexibility and overall tone. Both deliver supreme benefits and infuse a meditative aspect that is the core of a yoga class but not present in a pilates class, yet concentrates on strengthening the core as in a pilates class. While Yoga movements feel great for the body, the poses can be complex and challenging so we tune into Pilates for pelvic and spinal stability towards a healthier and safer practice. By fusing the best of both worlds, Yogalates supports the health of the human mind, body and spirit.

What is the yoga scene like in Dubai?

It is GROWING at a rapid pace! I lost count of the number of studios opening up in Dubai and it is extremely refreshing to see a powerful movement in the health scene. I am thrilled to be part of the pivotal movement and running Yogalates Bliss into its fifth year with my graduates (certified teachers) teaching across Dubai at the new studios. The yoga festivals are growing and so are the apparel lines. What once was believed as Yoga is just “meditation” and sitting and chanting “om” is finally being realised for its supreme therapeutic benefits that each and everyone of us can inject into our busy lives. There is also a growing number of yoga disciplines that clients are hungry for….from Vinyasa to Yin, Bikram to Hatha, Therapeutics to Aerial.

We want to know all about your retreat in Bali – tell us more!
This will be our first exclusive 8-Day Yogalates Bliss Retreat in North Bali on June 20th-27th! The retreat will be held at a private 3-villa compound called Jeda Villas – Jeda is an Indonesian word meaning Interlude or a break from reality, a heavenly getaway from the stressful life in the beautiful environment of Pemuteran located in North-West of Bali. We have specifically chosen this off-the-beaten track  far flung from the chaos of the densely touristic areas in Bali and surrounded by Javanese volcanoes and ocean only 20-minutes walking distance away. Our mission is to have our retreaters feel empowered, fully recharged and to reconnect with nature in one of Bali’s most stunning locations, widely acclaimed for its powerful inbound spiritual energy that brings peace and harmony.
In the beautiful lush tropical garden of Jeda villa and semi-open studio, our daily Yoga sessions will energise in the morning and restore energy in the evening. We will offer delicious fuss-free yet wholesome breakfasts and dinners with an Ayurvedic twist. In their free time they can head out to the ocean for a snorkel, swim or scuba dive at Pemuteran bay and Menjangan Island, hike and trek the nearby national park, soak up traditional Balinese massages, day trek to Indonesia’s most famous crater and home to the greatest most breathtaking acidic blue-greenish lake on earth, called Ijen Plateau, surrounded by white fluffy clouds.
 Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 22.31.52
How did it come about?
My heart skips a beat every time I hear the word BALI. I absolutely love the friendly presence of the locals and the healing and grounding energy of Bali. Having visited twice and always walking away with a profound release of energy, I must have manifested this fabulous retreat opportunity when an email landed in my inbox inviting Yogalates Bliss to host a retreat at Jeda villas. I jumped at the opportunity and am extremely excited to transport my guests to the quieter area of Bali surrounded by rich, dense nature. I’m a big believer in writing down what your five senses have encountered on a daily basis at a retreat and cannot wait to have them do so. This retreat has been kept very simple with no rigid schedule or plans apart from the daily yoga so that all guests are able to completely recharge their batteries by the pool or the beach at their own pace. They can do as little or as much as they wish with enough optional activities to book on arrival – pretty much the healthiest ebb and flow!
Is it for all levels or do you need to have done some yoga?
Yes! My evening Yogalates Bliss instructor – Kim Danoher – will be leading the retreat and teach both morning and sunset yoga practices which are open to all levels. There is a tendency to keep advancing in a practice but we’ve kept things simple yet invigorating for all.
